Lyle

Paratrooper Lyle
  • Rank: Unknown
  • Occupation: Paratrooper
  • Unit: 101st Airborne Division

Lyle (William Marsh) was one of a small group of 101st Airborne Division paratroopers who were tasked with defending a bridge that crossed the Merderet River at the small French village of Ramelle. The paratroopers were later joined by a small Ranger squad who helped them prepare a defense against an expected German counterattack.

During the German attack Lyle participated in an assault on a disabled Tiger tank, and shot one of the tank crew point blank in the face when he emerged from the turret hatch. As a handful of paratroopers attacked the tank, the Germans responded with a 20mm flak gun that tore into the tank and its attackers. Lyle was seriously wounded, and as he crawled away from the carnage he was shot in the chest by a passing German soldier.

Notes

Lyle was identified with the help of actor Ian Porter (Trask). Lyle's position during the attack on the tank is easy to see, and when the flak gun fires on the tank the soldier in Lyle's position is riddled with shells and his head explodes. This appears to be a continuity error as there is no way Lyle could crawl away from the tank after that!

Fact vs. Fiction

Lyle is a fictional character.
