Hansel and Gretel

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm collected numerous German folktales which were eventually compiled and published between 1812 and 1815 in two volumes entitled Children's and Household Tales.

In 1857, years after the brother's deaths, these collections were expanded and published as Grimm's Fairy Tales. Hansel and Gretel is the story of two German children who are abandoned in the woods by their parents, who are unable to provide food for all of their family.

Notes

Captain Miller makes a frustrated reference to Hansel and Gretel while his squad searches for Private Ryan near a field strewn with crashed gliders and American paratroopers.
