  • Rank: Lieutenant Colonel
  • Position: Commanding Officer
  • Unit: 2nd Ranger Battalion

On June 9th, 1944 (D-Day +3) Captain John Miller of Company C reported in to Lt. Colonel Anderson (Dennis Farina) after successfully completing a difficult mission in Sector 4. Miller reported that he and his men had destroyed numerous towed 88s, had encountered a large minefield, and had fought with soldiers of the German 346th Infantry Division (Von Luck Kampfgruppe). Miller's Rangers captured 23 Germans, and suffered losses of 70 men wounded and 35 killed.

Anderson was aware of Miller's leadership skills and the quality of his men, and next assigned him to a dangerous mission to retrieve a paratrooper, Private James Ryan, whose three brothers had recently been killed in combat. Miller was ordered to pick out a squad from Company C for the mission, with the rest of his men being reassigned to Company B.
